Restricting Logon Access

If you work in a multiuser computing environment, and you have full (administrator level) access to your computer, you might want to restrict unauthorized access to your "sensitive" files under Windows 95/98.

One way is to disable the Cancel button in the Logon dialog box.

Just run Regedit and go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Network/Logon

Create the "Logon" subkey if it is not present on your machine: highlight the Network key -> right-click in the left hand Regedit pane -> select New -> Key -> name it "Logon" (no quotes) -> press Enter. Then add/modify a DWORD value and call it "MustBeValidated" (don't type the quotes). Double-click it, check the Decimal box and type 1 for value.Now click the Start button -> Shut Down (Log off UserName) -> Log on as a different user, and you'll notice that the Logon Cancel button has been disabled.

How to Rename the Recycle Bin

You can add "Open With..." to the Right click context menu of all files.This is great for when you have several programs you want to open the same file types with. I use three different text editors so I added it to the ".txt" key.

3. Add a new Key named "OpenWith" by right clicking the "Shell" Key and selecting new
4. Set the (Default) to "Op&en With..."

How to backup your registry

Before you try to edit your PC's registry, make sure that your first export the keys in the registry that you plan to edit, or back up the whole registry. It is a very good practice to always backup your registry because if a problem occurs, you can just restore your registry to its previous state.

These are the easy steps on how you can export your registry keys

► Click Start, and then click Run.

► In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.

► On the File menu, click Export.

► In the Save in box, select the box at the bottom the bottom according to weather you want to export all or only selected branches of the registry.

► Next select a location in which to save the backup .reg file. In the File name box, type a file name, and then click Save.

Follow these steps to restore your registry to it's previous state

► To restore registry keys that you exported, double-click the .reg file that you saved

By default windows XP doesn't show the Administrator in the user list at the welcome screen. Here's a way to get around it.

Now head up to

create a new DWORD entry and name it as Administrator and change its value to 1.

exit and reboot for the changes to take effect.
To change it back change its value to 0 or simply delete the key.

Automatic Screen Refresh Tips

When you are working on your local computer and want to refresh any changes in your system automatically. For example some times you are watching sports results, online Stock Exchange rates and any changes to your hard drive but these changes are not usually refreshed until you press the F5 key on your keyboard.

To refresh your screen automatically you should edit your system Registry. But the best technique to edit the windows registry keys, always export or backup the whole windows registry keys on backup drive before editing. Because any mistake in Registry can cause serious problem in your computer to run properly.

Follow the given steps to change the updates automatically.

Follow the given steps to disable the right click functionality on desktop:

To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

Click Start button and type regedit in Run option then press Enter for next.

Here locate the location to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Here in right side panel, right click to create a new DWORD value with the name NoViewContextMenu (it is case sensitive), then assign number 1 in value data box.

Now close the registry editor and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

But next time, if you want to enable right click functionality on desktop then simply change the value of data box or delete the NoViewContextMenu DWORD item.

Add "copy to" and "move to" options in right click(XP)

It is hard to move or copy a file/s or folder/s to specific location. There is a option called "Send to" on context menu but it has some limitation. You can send content through it just few locations like.. My Documents, Floppy Disk etc. If You can add "Copy to" and "Move to" options on Right click(context menu) then it will increase your file/folder transfer facility. You can Copy and Move your content anywhere on your machine through Right click(context menu). I have described a registry trick following here.

Copy-paste following text in notepad and save it with .reg extension. Then just merge/run it. You will get 2 new options on your Right click(context menu).

You can add your name or anything you like that consists of 8 characters or less. This will replace the AM or PM next to the system time. But you can corrupt some trial licenses of software that you may have downloaded.

1. Open RegEdit

3. Add two new String values, "s1159" and "s2359"
4. Right click the new value name and modify. Enter anything you like up to 8 characters.

If you enter two different values when modifying, you can have the system tray display the two different values in the AM and PM.

Just check it, if it is not configured then change it to enable by double clicking on it and after applying again set it to not configured.

Creating a desktop shortcut for locking your computer

If you use your computer in an area where others may have access to it, and there are things on your system you would rather have kept confidential, locking your desktop when you leave the computer is an essential task. Here's a recipe for a desktop shortcut that will lock your computer in two easy clicks:

Right click on an empty area of the desktop and choose 'new' then 'shortcut.' The create shortcut wizard will open; in the first text box, type '%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' and then give your shortcut an appropriate name on the next page, and hit 'finish.'

You will notice that the shortcut you created has a blank icon. To select a more appropriate one, right click on the shortcut and hit 'properties.' In the 'shortcut' tab, click the 'change icon' button.

In the 'look for icons in this file' box, type '%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll' then click 'ok' to see a range of icons for your new shortcut. Choose an appropriate icon. Your desktop locking shortcut is now ready for use. Test it out.

I bet you didn't know that you could move your taskbar if you wanted. Mostly I leave mine at the bottom, like the rest of the population, but occasionally I feel like going wild and have the taskbar at the top of my computer. The Taskbar is that thin bar at the bottom where you can see all your open programs, the start menu, the clock, etc. Now, in WinXP they made it very nice to move it. This is how:

Right Click on the Taskbar
Click, Lock the Taskbar, until there is no check there
Left Click on the task bar and move it to where you want it...it will always rest up against an edge, so top, left or right.
Then click, Lock the Taskbar, again and it won't move from that spot.

These are the same instructions for Windows 98, ME, 2k, only you don't have to unlock the taskbar, you just left click on it and move...this was easier, but also you sometimes accidentally moved the task bar when you didn't want it to move, ugh. Well, there you have it, now put your taskbar to the top and see if you like it.

Windows XP comes with a built in on screen keyboard. Basically a graphic of a keyboard comes up and acts like your keyboard, you can use your mouse to hunt and peck around. What uses does this have and what did I use it for? Well, it's good for people with disabilities, where it would be easier to use a mouse than trying to type or it's great to use when your keyboard goes loco on you. Yes, we've all had our keyboard go nuts. Here is how you launch it:

Then the keyboard comes on

It's just that simple. It's best to make a desktop icon for it or a shortcut, because if your keyboard should go out on you, it would be handy to have it. All you do to create the shortcut is to:

File sharing between Windows XP and a Vista computer

Seems there are a number of people having problems sharing files between their Windows XP and Windows Vista computers. Me included. So after some research and playing around, I have finally worked out how to share my Vista files so that XP users can access them.

First things first

With the release of Vista, the default workgroup is MSHOME, not WORKGROUP like it is in XP. So make sure both PC’s are on the same workgroup before attempting to share files between XP and Vista.

In XP, go to Control Panel > System. Then on the “Computer Name” tab, click the change button, and edit the workgroup to be the same as Vista (MSHOME).

On the Vista machine

First go to the Network and Sharing Centre and make sure you have file sharing turned on. Having your network set to Private also helps.

Then go to the folder you want to share and Right-click on the file to bring a menu up > Choose Properties > Then Sharing. Click on Advanced Sharing. More details on how to share a file.
Click the Share this folder check box, and then click Permissions.

The Permission window should open.
Click on add to add a user. Then type in guest in the textbox that says Enter the object names to select.
Click Check Names which should then find Vista’s guest account and prefix your PC’s name in this format: YourComputerName\guest.
Click Ok to go back to the Permissions window.

You should now have the Guest account under group or users names.
Highlight the guest account and give it the relevant permissions. (Full control, Change or Read)
Click Ok and your done!

NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM Not Found or Missing Error Message

If you get an error that the NTLDR is not found during boot up there can be a number of causes. People automatically think this is a terrible error that cannot be fixed. Sometimes this is true, however most times it can be solved.

First thing I do is check where the computer is trying to boot from. If it is trying to boot from the cd rom and not the hard drive, of course the file would be missing. If this is the case you should change your boot sequence in the bios.

This message also comes up when I leave my external usb hard drive connected to the computer. I am too lazy to change the settings in bios, so I restart the computer with the external drive off. Then it boots as normal.

Another rumor is that this error message comes up when you use a copied version of Windows. Sometimes I think this is also true.

If it is definitely trying to boot C: drive then try the following steps below.

For FAT32

If you have FAT32 partitions, it is much simpler than with NTFS.
Just boot with a Win98 floppy and copy the NTLDR or NTDETECT.COM files
from the i386 directory to the root of the C:\ drive.

For NTFS:

Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
Enter in the administrator password when requested
Enter in the following commands (X: is replaced by the actual drive letter that is assigned to the CD ROM drive.
COPY X:\i386\NTLDR C\:
COPY X:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\
Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Another way is to put your hard drive into and external drive and copy the file from the cd that way.

Windows Error - System32\DRIVERS\PCI.SYS is either corrupt or missing

When this message "system32\DRIVERS\PCI.SYS is either corrupt or missing" your computer will probably not startup properly until this error is fixed. An example of the error looks like this:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

system32\DRIVERS\PCI.SYS

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd rom

Select "r" at the first screen to start repair.

When this error appears it can mean two things:

The actual file system32\DRIVERS\PCI.SYS is really corrupt or missing
There is a problem with a piece of hardware that is connected to your computer

If you have just upgraded to Windows XP and you get this Windows error system32\DRIVERS\PCI.SYS is either corrupt or missing, this means that there is hardware on your computer that is not compatible with Windows Xp.

How to diagnose a hardware problem

To do this you will have to open your computer case. Please read how to open your computer case safely before proceeding.

Turn the power off and remove all plugs from your computer
Remove all PCI cards that are in the computer. Be careful, you do not want to damage them.
Plug your computer in. Hopefully you have onboard graphics. If you do not, leave the graphics card in.
Restart the computer. If it starts, then the problem was with something you removed.
Start putting the PCI cards back, one by one. Making sure the power is off each time.
When the problem occurs again (system32\DRIVERS\PCI.SYS), you have found your problem.
If you can do without this PCI card, then leave it out. If not you will have to replace it.

To Restore the System32\DRIVERS\PCI.SYS file

Personally, when this Windows error happens to me, it usually turns out to be a hardware problem. However if the file is actually missing or corrupt you can replace system32\DRIVERS\PCI.SYS by restarting your computer with your Windows Xp disk in it and choosing to repair.

If you can start Windows, simply paste the file back into the Windows/system32 directory. Even if it is still there, it may be corrupt.

You can also choose to install a new copy of Windows which will cause you to loose all your previous data, but fix the error also

Cannot enable Show Hidden files Check

A common virus disables the Show hidden files and folders function in Windows XP. Here is how to enable it again.

The symptom of this problem is every time you select the Show hidden files and folders options under Folder Options, the screen just flashes when you click OK and the hidden files and folders are not unhidden.

You can fix this problem with a registry hack:

1. Click Start > Run and type REGEDIT
2. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER then SOFTWARE then Microsoft

then Windows then CurrentVersion then Explorer then Advanced then Folder

then Hidden then Showall

On the right side, double click on the checked value and give it a value of 1.

You should now be able to enable hidden files and folders

USB drives (also known as flash drive, mobile disk or pen drive) are becoming the most popular standard in these days to store and move data. USB support is available in PCs of both IBM-compatible and Apple computers. USB port support hot plugging and plug & play. The USB allows up to 127 devices to be connected to the bus via a single port. The driver name "usbstor.sys" is used to communicate any USB drives to the operating system.

USB drives are indeed very useful in these days but a user can easily use to transfer any confidential information from your computer to others and can also upload viruses affected files to your computer by accidentally or deliberately. But you can prevent the users to connect any USB drives in the computer by disabling the ability of "usbstor.sys" (USB driver) to load in system. It will block the USB storage devices only and your system USB keyboard, mouse and others USB devices will work properly.

Perform the following steps to block the USB storage devices:

To edit this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.
First click on Start button to open "Run" and type "regedit" then press Ok button to open the Registry Editor.

In registry editor locate the given path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR

Here select the "USBSTOR" folder and in right side of the registry editor panel find the value with name "Start".

Double click on "Start" and then set its value 4 under "Value data" section.

Close the Registry editor and restart your computer for changes to apply.

Now when you want to restore the default setting, open the Registry Editor and set its value back to 3.

Now again close the Registry editor and restart your computer for changes to apply.

Restore Previously Open Folders After Shutdown

If you need to access lot of folders on your home computer or on the network regularly, then you can set them re-open automatically, when you will login, shutdown or restart your computer next time. There is no need to open regularly used folders manually, just configure the simple sitting, your computer will automatically reload all the previously opened windows.

By default windows XP disables this option to reload automatically all the previously opened windows, when you login on, shutdown or restart your computer.

Follow the given steps to configure your computer to reload previously opened folders automatically after shutdown.

To edit this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.
First click on Start button then go to Control Panel.
Open the “Appearance and Themes” option in control panel then click on Folder Options.
A small windows dialog box will appear with the title “Folder options”, click on View tab.
Under the Advanced setting section, scroll down to bottom and click the “Restore previous folder windows at logon” option and then click Ok button to save sitting.
Now when you log off, restart or shutdown, your computer will automatically open the previously opened folders from the same location as before.

Change the Default Directory of Software Installation

You may want to change the location of your system default folder (C:\Program Files) from C drive to another system drives (D or E drive). By default software setup will attempt to install program in C:\Program Files directory. It is good practice to make the backup of the installed programs, if you installed all your programs in other than C drive. If you have little knowledge about editing windows registry then you can configure your computer for this purpose.

Follow the given steps to configure windows registry:

1. Click on Start button then type Regedit in Run option.

2. Here navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

3. In right side panel, double click on ProgramFileDir.

4. Now modify the value to any other drive (for example D:\Program Files).
